The School Advisory Council of Fruita 8/9 will host a meeting to discuss the new math curriculum Thursday, November 5 at 6 P.M. This will be a parent information meeting that will have a presentation explaining the new math curriculum.

The recently adopted math curriculum uses a group system that allows students to get different outlooks on how a problem can be solved. These groups are small with only 2 to 3 students in each in order to not overwhelm a student and allow them interact with other students while also working independently.

As the new math program helps with working in a group, it also shows students how math is connected to real life. The teachers support this by not lecturing all the time, but also asking questions that make students look deeper into problems. Teachers promote involvement by letting the students perform activities that are relevant to the problem, although it is promoted more in the eighth grade then the ninth.

The meeting at the Fruita 8/9 library is open to anyone interested in learning about the new School District 51 math curriculum. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.
