Art on the Corner has new works installed.

Back in 1984, Dave Davis, local scultor and then, Director of the Western Colorado Center for the Arts, had an idea. That idea has grown into a project that continues to promote the arts and their place in daily life.

This unique outdoor exhibit of public art in the form of sculptures in various media and styles, has been the inspiration for many other such programs across the nation. Grand Junction’s Davis and his friends planted that inspirational seed.

Junction’s Downtown Authority took over the project in 1989. With the formation of a committee representing the Downtown Association, the Center for the Arts, businesses and interested individuals, the exhibit has maintained its excellent quality and has grown in the number of sculptures. It is one of the reasons many visit this area.

Artists from all over the country have the opportunity to show their work. The work is judged, (both professional and amateur) on originality, durability, and suitability for outdoor display. Applications are available on the DDA website.

The Arts and Jazz Festival, held in May, has become the date for new installations.

With over 100 art works displayed, the City now hosts a collection of these works in its permanent display. Adding to the commerce of the city through its attraction to visitors and commerce, the Art on the Corner has added to the coffers of the city. It has served as inspiration for the creation of many more pieces of art through the years.

This year was a good example of that fact, as artists were helped to install their works. One may wonder down Main Street, from 7th Street to 2nd and find wonderful, artful, surprises. Go see for yourself.
